Fun Facts about Cozumel, Mexico

When you think of vacationing in Mexico, places like Cancun, Riviera Maya, Cabo, etc usually come to mind. We were lucky enough to find a hidden gem…Cozumel. I cannot describe to you how much we LOVED our anniversary trip (even though I recently discovered we were expecting) and we cannot wait to go back!

Cozumel has adventures for everyone…whether you want to relax, go horseback riding, snorkel the reefs, or learn about history. I love sharing destinations that we enjoyed…so here are my fun facts about Cozumel (and a little bonus suggestion at the end)

Cozumel is home to the 2nd largest Coral Reef System

One of our FAVORITE things to do on vacation is snorkel. I have to admit it takes me a minute to control the panic of breathing while under water but after that minute…its pure beauty. Being able to see such gorgeous underwater habitats is truly a blessing. We snorkeled every chance we had…which was a lot since the resort had free equipment for use by guests LOL.

Most of the year has beautiful weather in Cozumel. There is very little gloomy days however, October and November are considered their rainy season. If you are thinking of visiting, I would suggest staying away from these 2 months just to have a little less chance for rain.

You cannot drink the water! When you are staying in Cozumel, you must drink bottled water. Our hotel provided bottled water in the room for drinking and brushing teeth. The water there can be known to cause some not so fun tummy issues.

The Best Beaches are on the West Side

Our resort was on the west side so I can attest to this! The beaches are breathtaking…white sand, crystal waters…oh take me back! We did get to take a trip to the east side of the island (but more on that later).

Cozumel is one of the most popular cruise ports. Approximately up to 8 cruise ships can dock there DAILY! Over 3 million cruisers visit annually.

Cozumel is one of the only locations you can use US currency.

BONUS TIP!

If you are ever visiting Cozumel, whether for an extended period or just a quick pit stop on your cruise, I highly recommend the Cozumel Bar Hop! While I was unable to participate (boo!) it was a great trip around the island. You get transportation to 4 of the best bars in Cozumel… and you get to venture to the east side where the locals hang! Beaches, bars, and FUN! What more can you ask for in an excursion???
